Surveillance of nosocomial bacteremia in France. 2003 Results
This report presents the national results from the second year of surveillance of nosocomial bacteremia in France. In 2003, 137 healthcare facilities participated in the French surveillance network for nosocomial bacteremia. The incidence of nosocomial bacteremia in short-stay wards was 0.62 per 1,000 patient-days; it was highest in intensive care units (2.75%). Catheters were the most common site of entry (21.8%), and the urinary tract was also a common site of entry (20.3%). Staphylococcus species were predominant, accounting for 36.6% of isolated pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus: 19.7%, coagulase-negative staphylococci: 16.9%). Escherichia coli was also very frequently found, accounting for 20.4% of isolates. The frequency of methicillin resistance in S. aureus was high (41.2%). It was even higher for S. epidermidis (73.5%). Regardless of the cause, the mortality rate within 7 days of the onset of the episode was 12.6%. (R.A.)
