This article presents data on the prevalence of infections from a prevalence survey conducted in two hospitals in Latvia. This is the first time a survey of this type has been conducted in Latvia. The hospitals were selected based on the presence of an infectious disease consultant and a hospital epidemiologist involved in infection control activities. Here, the prevalence survey model was used. In conclusion, the study results show that the techniques used are practical and that it is possible to derive information from them that meets the intended objectives. This pilot study clearly shows that healthcare-associated infections are more common in Latvian hospitals than official data indicate and that a national prevalence study is necessary to obtain data covering the entire country.
