COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for September 9, 2021

Key Points

In week 35, SARS-CoV-2 transmission continues to decline across the country, accompanied by a decrease in hospital admissions in all metropolitan regions. The situation is improving in the overseas territories (except in Mayotte), but remains critical in Martinique and Guadeloupe in terms of hospital pressure.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence and hospitalization rates remain highest in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Occitanie

    • New hospital admissions are decreasing in nearly all regions

    Overseas territories:
    • Guadeloupe and Martinique: very high incidence rates but declining, with continued significant strain on hospital capacity in both territories

    • French Guiana: high incidence rates and hospital indicators, but appearing to stabilize

    • Mayotte: rapid increase in incidence, though it remains at a moderate level to date

Variants

  • 98.3% of cases identified as the Delta variant through sequencing as of August 17, 2021

Contact tracing

  • Average number of reported contacts per case remains low, indicating incomplete identification of contacts by cases

Prevention

  • Vaccination coverage in France as of September 7: 73.2% for one dose and 68.3% for full vaccination

  • Importance of combined measures: vaccination, preventive measures, and contact tracing
