COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for March 4, 2021

Key Points

In Week 08, the situation remains concerning due to the continued rise in the number of new cases at a high level, amid significant strain on hospitals and the growing spread of more transmissible variants.

  • Increase in the number of new cases for the second consecutive week

  • Improvement in all indicators among people aged 75 and older, consistent with increased vaccination coverage

  • COVID-19-related mortality remains high

  • Mainland France: the hardest-hit regions are Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Hauts-de-France, and Île-de-France

  • Overseas territories: in Mayotte, indicators are declining but the incidence rate remains very high

Variants

Increase in the proportion of suspected variants of interest identified by screening RT-PCR:

  • suspected cases of variant 20I/501Y.V1: 59% (over 50% in 57 metropolitan departments)

  • suspected cases of the 20H/501Y.V2 or 20J/501Y.V3 variants: 6% (above 10% in 9 metropolitan departments)

Prevention

  • Vaccination:

    • 3,133,478 people who have received at least one dose of the vaccine

    • Vaccination coverage among residents of nursing homes (Ehpad) or long-term care facilities (USLD) is 82% for the first dose

  • Importance of consistently following preventive measures and limiting contact.

  • If symptoms develop, immediate isolation is required, and a test must be performed as soon as possible.

  • It is essential to continue identifying and controlling transmission chains.
