COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for December 9, 2021
Key Points
In Week 48, the spread of SARS-CoV-2, already very intense in mainland France, continued to increase, with hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care units still rising sharply.
Mainland France:
Incidence rate higher than during the peaks of the third and fourth waves
Incidence rate above 600 per 100,000 among 30- to 39-year-olds and above 900 per 100,000 among 6- to 10-year-olds
New hospitalizations and critical care admissions on the rise in nearly all regions
Overseas territories:
Reunion: Incidence rate and new hospitalizations on the rise
Martinique: active circulation of the virus and an increase in hospital admissions
Variants
Over 99% of cases identified as the Delta variant through sequencing during the S46 Flash survey (November 15–17)
59 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in France as of December 9 at 4:00 p.m.
Moderate circulation of the B.1.640 variant in the region
Contact tracing
Decrease in the proportion of investigated cases (in week 47), linked to high incidence
Decrease in the proportion of new cases belonging to a known transmission chain
Prevention
Vaccination as of December 7, 2021 (Covid Vaccine data):
77.7% of the total population had received at least one dose, and 76.1% were fully vaccinated
Among those aged 65 and older, 51.4% had received a booster dose; this rate rose to 76.4% among eligible individuals in this age group
Importance of combined measures: vaccination and booster shots, participation in contact tracing, and adherence to all preventive measures, including reducing contact, particularly through telework
