COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage and Its Impact on the Dynamics of the Pandemic

Nine months after the launch of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in France, more than 50 million people have been vaccinated. As of October 17, 2021, 76% of the population had received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 74% were fully vaccinated. Vaccination coverage (VC) varies notably by age and department. VC is particularly low in the overseas departments. As of October 17, 2021, the vaccination coverage rates for those who had received at least one dose and those who were fully vaccinated were 94% and 92%, respectively, for residents in nursing homes for the elderly (Ehpad) or long-term care units (USLD); 96% and 96% for private-practice healthcare providers; 91% and 90% for professionals working in Ehpad facilities, as well as for salaried healthcare workers. COVID-19 vaccination has had a significant impact on the epidemic, particularly for those eligible for priority vaccination. Starting with the third wave of the epidemic (March to May 2021), the weekly numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths were reduced by nearly 90% for Ehpad residents compared to the second wave, and the weekly number of hospitalizations by 30% for people aged 75 and older. During the fourth wave (mid-July to mid-October 2021), the average weekly numbers of cases and deaths were reduced by 94% and 96% for nursing home residents compared to the second wave, and by 80% for people aged 75 and older. Hospitalizations were reduced by 68% and deaths by 54% among those aged 50 to 64, and hospitalizations by 24% among those aged 18 to 49. These results underscore the effectiveness of the strategy of rapidly rolling out COVID-19 vaccination by prioritizing those most at risk.
