Screening for Hepatitis B and C in France in 2013: the LaboHep Survey.
Objectives: To estimate the screening activity for hepatitis C (anti-HCV antibodies (Ac)) and hepatitis B ( (HBsAg)) in 2013 in clinical laboratories (LABM), at the national and regional levels, and to track changes compared to 2010. Methods: The following data were collected for 2013 from a random sample of 1,504 LABMs: the number of anti-HCV Ab and HBsAg tests performed, the number of confirmed positive tests, and the sex and age of individuals confirmed positive for the first time in the laboratory. Estimates were calculated taking into account the sampling plan and after adjustment for LABM activity. Results: The number of anti-HCV and HBsAg tests performed in France in 2013 is estimated at 3.6 million [95% CI: 3.4–3.9] and 3.8 million [95% CI: 3.5–4.0], respectively, representing an increase of 6% and 12% compared to 2010. The positivity rate remained stable compared to 2010, estimated at 0.9% for anti-HCV and 0.8% for HBsAg in 2013. These indicators vary by region. The French overseas departments and regions (DROM) are characterized, compared to mainland France, by higher screening rates for anti-HCV antibodies (79 per 1,000 inhabitants vs. 55 per 1,000 inhabitants) and for HBsAg (89 per 1,000 inhabitants vs. 57 per 1,000 inhabitants) and a lower positivity rate for anti-HCV antibodies (0.3% vs. 0.9%), but significantly higher for HBsAg in Mayotte (3.4%) or French Guiana (1.5%) (vs. 0.8% in mainland France). Conclusion: This new edition of the LaboHep survey highlighted high screening activity, which has increased since 2010, as well as marked regional disparities, particularly between mainland France and the overseas departments and regions (DROM).
