Perceptions of information and reported screening practices regarding hepatitis B and C in the general population of France’s overseas departments and territories. 2014 DOM Health Barometer Survey
While reported knowledge and practices regarding hepatitis B and C have been the subject of several studies among the general population in mainland France, little data is available from the overseas departments and regions (DROM). A module on hepatitis B and C was therefore included in the 2014 Health Barometer survey conducted in Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and Réunion, using representative samples of the general population aged 15–75. This article describes the perceived level of information and reported screening practices regarding hepatitis B and C, as well as their associated factors in the general overseas population. The main findings show: (1) a very low sense of being informed, with over 60% of respondents reporting that they were somewhat or very poorly informed about viral hepatitis or did not know what these infections are. The reported sense of being informed was lower among younger individuals and those with lower levels of education; (2) reported screening was more frequent in the French overseas departments and regions (DROMs) than in metropolitan France: 30 to 40% of respondents (depending on the DROM) reported having been screened for hepatitis B or hepatitis C at some point in their lives, compared to 15% and 19%, respectively, in metropolitan France in 2010. This study highlights, as in metropolitan France but to a greater extent, the need to improve the general overseas population’s knowledge of hepatitis B and C, in order to increase the uptake of preventive measures among those at risk: screening and vaccination (hepatitis B).
