Introduction – National prevalence surveys (NPS) of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial treatments in healthcare facilities were conducted in 2017 and 2022 in France. The objective of this article is to describe, through a secondary analysis, the antifungal treatments (AF) and nosocomial fungal infections (NFI) observed in 2022, as well as their trends compared to 2017.Method – The 2017 and 2022 ENP surveys were conducted on a specific day between May 15 and June 30, including patients with short-, medium-, and long-term stays at participating healthcare facilities (i.e., 151,676 patients in 2022 versus 80,898 in 2017). Prevalence estimates for the hospitalized patient population in France are reported per 100 patients with a 95% confidence interval. The analyses take a sampling plan into account. Results – In 2022, the prevalence of AF treatments is estimated at 1.05 [0.93–1.16] per 100 patients, a significant increase compared to 2017 (0.78 [0.64–0.92]). The highest prevalences are in hematology and intensive care. The most commonly prescribed antifungals for curative treatment are fluconazole, amphotericin B, and caspofungin; for prophylaxis, they are posaconazole, amphotericin B, and fluconazole. The prevalence of patients with at least one antifungal infection was 0.23 [0.19–0.27] in 2022 compared to 0.14 [0.10–0.18] in 2017, representing a 64% increase. Candida albicans is the most common species. Conclusion – Given the increasing prevalence of antifungal treatments, it is essential to continue efforts to promote appropriate use, particularly by implementing coordinated, multidisciplinary initiatives that contribute to the effectiveness of care.
