Clinical manifestations observed in the first case series of influenza caused by the emerging influenza A(H1N1)v virus. Special issue. Chronicle of the onset of a pandemic
Clinical manifestations observed in the first groups of patients affected by the new A(H1N1) virus are beginning to be published. Based on four publications and with the caveats associated with biases inherent in the nature of the sources, this article presents a summary of the clinical data available to date. The affected individuals are predominantly young. The majority of patients present with flu-like symptoms comparable to those observed during seasonal influenza. To date, no deaths have been reported among imported cases in Europe, Japan, or Australia. The deaths reported in North America have occurred primarily among young individuals with underlying medical conditions. (R.A.)
