Estimating Pesticide Exposure: Data and Geographic Approaches. Summary of the Seminar Held on June 28, 2022
A methodological workshop on geographical approaches in studies of agricultural pesticides and health was held on June 28, 2022, at Santé publique France, bringing together the leading French research teams working on this topic. This event provided an overview of the research conducted by a large number of teams on estimating population exposure to pesticides, the challenges posed by accessing more reliable data on plant protection products used by crop type, and the need for strong synergy between producers and users of environmental data for health. This seminar facilitated the deepening and initiation of collaborations between data producers and scientific teams to adapt environmental data to health issues, such as supplementing land-use data obtained through image analysis spanning several decades. Today, the availability of data on the actual, spatially detailed uses of plant protection products in agriculture is a prerequisite for addressing public health questions and, beyond that, for measuring the impacts of pesticides on ecosystem quality within a “One Health” approach.
