Joint Statement by Santé publique France and the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety Regarding the PestiRiv Study, a Study on Pesticide Exposure Among Residents Living Near Wine-Growing and Non-Wine-Growing Areas

This opinion, issued on July 2, 2002, concerns the findings of the PestiRiv study conducted jointly by Santé publique France and ANSES. The preparation of this joint opinion by the two agencies is based on the review of the study’s results by, on the one hand, the “Health, Environment, and Work” Expert Committee (CE SET) of Santé publique France and, on the other hand, the specialized “Assessment of Risks Related to Airborne Environments” Expert Committee (CES Air) of ANSES. The PestiRiv study aims to compare pesticide exposure among people living within 500 meters of vineyards with that of people living more than 1 kilometer from any crops. It also analyzed the impact of treatment periods—which are more intense between March and August—and factors that may influence this exposure (amount of active ingredients used, distance, etc.). To do this, environmental contamination was measured in indoor and outdoor air, household dust, and garden produce, while biological exposure was measured in urine and hair samples. With the participation of 2,688 volunteers, including 1,946 adults and 742 children, spread across six wine-growing regions, the study tested for 56 active ingredients in these five distinct matrices. Based on the study’s results and the conclusions and recommendations adopted by the expert committees involved, ANSES and Santé publique France drafted a joint conclusion, highlighting the key findings the agencies have drawn from this work. This opinion includes an introduction—covering the study’s context, objectives, and methodology—followed by three parts: Part 1—Conclusions and recommendations formulated by the “Health, Environment, and Work” (CE SET) expert committee of Santé publique France within its field of expertise; Part 2 – Conclusions and recommendations formulated by ANSES’s specialized expert committee on “Assessment of Risks Related to Airborne Environments” (CES Air) within its field of expertise; Part 3 – Joint conclusion by Santé publique France and ANSES.
