Development of a high-resolution map of agricultural crops for mainland France. General principles and methodology

To meet the needs of epidemiological studies examining the links between environmental exposure to pesticides and the onset of certain chronic diseases, and in the absence of finely localized quantitative data on the use of agricultural plant protection products in France, Santé publique France has developed a method for creating a detailed map of crop cultivation. This mapping is consistent across the entire metropolitan territory, adaptable, usable at a sub-municipal scale, and, as data becomes available, allows for the consideration of the latency period for the onset of most diseases for which a link to exposure to plant protection products is suspected or documented. The purpose of this report is to: Provide a detailed description of all the data identified and available to meet the objectives of such a map, as well as the data ultimately selected for its construction; Detail the methodology used to construct the map (sequence of various data combination, cleaning, and refinement processes); Explain the use of this mapping within the framework of the Géocap Agri epidemiological study (a national study conducted by Santé publique France in partnership with the National Registry of Childhood Cancers and ANSES); Discuss the strengths and limitations of using this map of agricultural crop distribution, its potential contribution to epidemiological studies, and anticipated developments aimed at improving the description of environmental exposures to plant protection products used in agriculture.
