"Poppers" is the common name for alkyl nitrites. They are used to enhance sexual experiences or for the brief euphoria they induce immediately after inhalation. Despite various periods of prohibition, poppers remained widely available throughout the 2000s, and their use even saw a significant increase between 2000 and 2010. Among both adults and adolescents, it is the second most commonly used illicit drug after cannabis, confirming that its use extends far beyond gay and lesbian communities, which are sometimes portrayed as emblematic of its consumption. Poppers use was reported by 5.3% of 18- to 64-year-olds in 2010, particularly among men (7.2% compared to 3.4% for women). By the end of adolescence, it affected 8.8% of girls and 9.2% of boys. Poppers enjoy a generally positive image among the general population, particularly among young people. However, this product is not without risk, even though the risk of dependence is particularly low.
