Exposure to stressors and the psychosocial impact of the Tohoku earthquake and its aftermath on French nationals in Japan in March 2011. A qualitative study

The earthquake that struck Japan on March 11, 2011, triggered a tsunami and a nuclear accident. The objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of the exposure of French nationals present in Japan to stressors related to these events, as well as the resulting psychosocial impact and their needs for information and support. A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted with approximately ten individuals selected from those who had responded to the survey offered by the InVS. The interviews took place between June and October 2013, either in person (7 in France, 2 in Japan) or via videoconference for one person residing in Japan. The results confirm the deeply distressing experience of this multifaceted disaster, which can contribute—sometimes long after the event—to the onset of anxiety, mood disorders, or personality changes that may require medical care. The stress factors typically identified in connection with natural disasters were found to be present. The issue of information was central, particularly regarding radiation contamination, which caused prolonged anxiety. Living abroad is a unique situation that alters how such events are experienced. This experience significantly influenced or precipitated decisions regarding one’s life. These results will be used to plan post-disaster epidemiological studies. They confirm the importance of an initial registration of those affected and of providing tailored information and screening services maintained over the long term, which gives exposed individuals the opportunity to remain active in their choices and decisions.
