Cognitive CPS Worksheet: Managing Impulses (C2.2)
This fact sheet was written by Nadine Fréry and Béatrice Lamboy based on the Santé publique France CPS Volume 2 framework. It focuses on the second general cognitive psychosocial competency (CPS) and provides a summary of a specific cognitive psychosocial competency: Managing Impulses (C2.2). Managing one’s impulses refers to the ability to consciously decide whether or not to transform an impulse to act into actual behavior. This requires the ability to stop, suspend, avoid, interrupt, or postpone a behavior depending on the situation and the goal being pursued. Managing one’s impulses involves developing one area of knowledge and three areas of skill: Understanding one’s capacity for self-control; Strengthening one’s capacity for self-control by improving the state of one’s inner self; Strengthening one’s capacity for self-control by improving the quality of one’s immediate environment; Strengthening one’s capacity for self-control by enhancing the cognitive abilities of the Subject Self. This specific skill can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical section, practical examples are presented for adults, adolescents, and children.
