Expert Perspectives: A Multi-Faceted Look at Research on Intrafamilial Abuse of Children and Adolescents - March 30–31, 2023
On March 30 and 31, 2023, Santé publique France brought together research teams, government agencies, data producers and users, as well as professionals working in the fields of health, justice, and social services, to discuss public health and epidemiological research on intrafamilial abuse of minors. This workshop provided an initial overview of the epidemiological knowledge currently available in France. Over the past few decades, numerous international studies have demonstrated the multiple short- and long-term impacts of intrafamilial abuse on children’s development and health. However, the data currently available only partially document this issue. The speakers highlighted the challenges in conducting studies and proposed potential solutions for successfully carrying out surveys on the topic of intrafamilial maltreatment of children and adolescents. This work is part of an effort to better understand and document the burden that abuse places on child development and public health. It will also help raise awareness of this complex issue, which has received little attention in epidemiology and public health to date.
