Pregnancy and early childhood are critical periods for children’s development, health, and well-being throughout their lives. Being born and raised in a family living in poverty is recognized as a significant adversity factor whose impact affects perinatal and developmental health indicators. This article explores the resulting disruption of stress response systems and the consequences for the quality of parent-child interactions. It highlights levers for action to positively influence children’s development.
