Health Surveillance and the Emergence of Infectious Diseases in Animals and Humans: Concepts and Definitions. Special Issue. Special Focus on Exotic Diseases
This article offers a definition of emerging infectious diseases and the various forms that their emergence can take. The factors driving the introduction of new pathogens and their emergence are presented using an ecological approach to the concept of species barriers. Finally, given the inevitable and unpredictable nature of future outbreaks, it is necessary to establish principles for action in terms of surveillance, preparedness, and response.
