Health-Promoting Urban Planning: Taking Action for Health, the Environment, and Reducing Inequalities
Based on the "Health in All Policies" approach promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the concept of healthy urban design (HUD) aims to systematically and simultaneously take into account the health and environmental impacts of any urban planning project. The goal is to encourage planning and urban design choices that minimize people’s exposure to risk factors such as air pollution, noise pollution, social isolation, etc., and maximize their exposure to protective factors—such as physical activity, access to healthcare or green spaces, etc.—all with the aim of reducing social inequalities in health.
