Evaluation of Mediation Services at the Toulouse Health Center: Building Users’ and Patients’ Capacity and Empowerment in Health [Interview]

After her assessment, Nadine Haschar-Noé emphasizes that the work of health mediators at the Case de santé in Toulouse is grounded in a professional approach based on the ethical principles of supporting individuals—namely, “reaching out” and “doing with”—while also incorporating “being with” and “doing together.” In its individual support component, mediation aims to address the needs expressed by individuals: information on their rights, physical accompaniment to a medical appointment, scheduling appointments with a healthcare professional, interpretation services, assistance in compiling a file to access rights, provision of preventive supplies, housing solutions, etc. The sociologist concludes that this "support-maintenance" approach, which is primarily social, health-related, and relational, ensures a presence and unconditional support for vulnerable populations (85% of the active caseload) based on building a relationship of interpersonal trust and the mediators’ ability to resolve their difficulties in accessing healthcare and common law.
