Career interruptions among women pose public health challenges due to the difficulties they face in re-entering the labor market—following maternity leave, for example—and the risk of financial hardship in the event of a separation or the loss of a spouse’s job. Occupational exposures harmful to health, precarious employment conditions, and work-family conflicts at pivotal career junctures are other risk factors that must be addressed to reduce health inequalities in older age.
