Chapter 3: An Updated Overview of Type 2 Diabetes and Its Complications in France

The Entred 3 study reveals an aging population with type 2 diabetes in mainland France and a higher prevalence among women in the overseas departments and regions (DROM). Risk factors remain high: obesity (39% in mainland France, 25–38% in the DROM), impaired glucose tolerance (17–34%), poorly controlled hypertension (33–44%), smoking (13–14% in mainland France and Réunion), and high alcohol consumption (7% in mainland France and lower in the DROM). Complications are common: coronary artery disease (19% in mainland France and Réunion), strokes (7–12%), retinopathy (7–16%), foot complications (8–12%), and kidney failure (16–26%). These findings call for specific and tailored interventions.
