Preventing cross-transmission of pertussis. Assessment of knowledge and practices in maternity wards
Since 2008, the health surveillance unit of the Departmental Directorate of Health and Social Affairs (DDASS) in the Nord department has observed an increase in the number of reported pertussis cases involving healthcare workers in high-risk settings such as maternity wards. Against the backdrop of evolving recommendations regarding the prevention, diagnosis, and management of pertussis, the objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and organizational measures implemented in maternity wards in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region to prevent cross-transmission of pertussis. Methods > A comprehensive survey was conducted among all public health nurses, healthcare managers, and occupational physicians in the region’s 38 maternity wards. These professionals were sent self-administered questionnaires, which had been previously tested during preparatory interviews conducted at a sample of maternity wards. Results > Of the 38 maternity wards, 36 responded to the survey. While general knowledge about pertussis was generally satisfactory, the disease was perceived as a childhood illness, and its transmission by adults and adolescents was largely overlooked. The extension of vaccination recommendations to all healthcare professionals and adults was insufficiently known, including among occupational physicians. Only a few facilities had protocols in place for managing pertussis cases. Outlook > Information and awareness-raising initiatives for healthcare staff regarding preventive measures must be organized, involving occupational health services and medical teams. The development of protocols requires close collaboration between the operational hygiene team, the healthcare team, the laboratory technician, and the occupational physician.
