Key Points

• A heat wave affected southern mainland France between September 4 and 8. The monitoring data presented in this bulletin covers the period from September 4 to 7 (the date of the latest data available for the publication of this bulletin). During this period, 7% of the population in mainland France was affected by at least one day of an orange heat wave alert. 
• The number of daily emergency room visits across all age groups for the iCanicule indicator (hyperthermia/heatstroke, dehydration, hyponatremia) fluctuated between 100 and 120 before the heatwave, then rose to 142 visits on September 3 and 153 on September 4. Since then, daily visit numbers have returned to levels similar to those observed before the heat wave. These visits involve all age groups, but more than half (53%) involve people aged 75 and older.
• The number of daily hospitalizations following visits to the emergency room for the iCanicule indicator has fluctuated between 74 and 121 (peaking on September 4) since early September. Two-thirds of these hospitalizations involved people aged 75 and older.
• The number of daily SOS Médecins consultations for all age groups under the iCanicule indicator fluctuated around 10 consultations per day between September 1 and 5, peaking at 29 consultations on September 6, and then dropping back to 12 consultations on September 7 (unconsolidated data). These calls came from all age groups, with nearly half (45%) involving people aged 75 and older.
• The impacts observed throughout the summer underscore the importance of implementing prevention and adaptation measures for the entire population, based on weather forecasts, without waiting to see actual impacts. As a reminder, impacts on morbidity do not allow us to predict mortality.
