Introduction – Alcohol consumption, which is very high in France, poses numerous health risks, both in the short and long term. Over the past few decades, drinking patterns have changed significantly. The objective of this article is to present an overview of alcohol consumption in France in 2021 based on the Baromètre de Santé publique France survey, updating findings from 2017 in mainland France and 2014 in the overseas departments and allowing for an assessment of trends over nearly 30 years. Method – The data used are drawn from the 1992, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2014, 2017, and 2021 editions of the Santé publique France Barometer, which are telephone surveys conducted on a random sample of adults aged 18–75 residing in mainland France and in the overseas departments and regions (DROM). The indicators presented are derived from the Audit-C questionnaire module (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption short version). Results – Long-term trends reveal a decline in daily and weekly consumption over the past decades, mirroring declines in sales volumes. However, the phenomenon of heavy episodic drinking follows contrasting recent trends: while it is generally decreasing among young men, it tends to increase among women over 35. Regional disparities are also observed. Conclusion – Alcohol consumption patterns continue to evolve, and the implementation of prevention measures to reduce the risks associated with alcohol consumption remains necessary.
