Public Health France Barometers

The Santé publique France Health Barometer: a survey of health-related behaviors, opinions, and knowledge designed to guide public health prevention and education policies.

Since 1992, INPES (which became Santé publique France in 2016) has been conducting, in partnership with numerous health stakeholders, a series of surveys known as the "Health Barometers," which examine the various health behaviors and attitudes of the French population.

These surveys are two-stage random samples (selecting a household and then an individual), conducted using a computer-assisted telephone interviewing system. The 2014 Health Barometer is the sixth wave of this extensive study.

Four years after the legal opening of the online gambling market in France, this survey was launched to assess the impact of this expanded market on gambling practices. Several other topics related to gambling practices (use of psychoactive substances, mental health) or concerning emerging issues (e-cigarettes, internet use for health purposes) were included in the questionnaire.

The fieldwork for the survey was conducted by Ipsos and took place from December 11, 2013, to May 31, 2014, in metropolitan France, with 15,635 participants. Landline and mobile phone numbers were randomly generated from the prefixes assigned by ARCEP.

To be eligible, a household had to include at least one person aged 15 to 75 who spoke French. Respondents were selected by random drawing from among eligible household members via landline, and from among regular mobile phone users via mobile. The survey took an average of 33 minutes to complete. The data were weighted by the number of eligible individuals and telephone lines within the household and calibrated against the most recent INSEE national reference data available at the time of preparing the 2014 Health Barometer database, namely those from the 2012 Employment Survey.

The results of the 2014 Health Barometer were made public through reports, articles, and other publications (listed below by topic)
