Results of the permanent study on home and leisure injuries (EPAC). Years 1999-2001. EPAC Network. Synthesis

Home and leisure injuries (HLIs) are " unintentional injuries " that occur at home or in its immediate surroundings (garden, courtyard, garage and other outbuildings), outside (in a store, on the sidewalk, near the home, etc.), at school, while participating in sports, during vacation or leisure time. Home and leisure injuries are very numerous. In France, they cause nearly 20 000 deaths each year, that is nearly 3 times more than traffic injuries and 20 times more than occupational injuries. If the number has been diminishing since the beginning of the 1980s, it will probably increase in the coming years, given the anticipated increase in the proportion of elderlypeople in the population. Besides deaths, home and leisure injuries are the source of several million recourses to medical care each year in France. The sequelae resulting from the most serious injuries cause much suffering while generating a heavy load for society to bear. Despite their importance, HLIs are not always a primary concern, whereas in the public health viewpoint, all injuries could and should be avoided through adapted prevention measures based on sound epidemiological knowledge of their onset. The Permanent Study on Home and Leisure Injuries (L'Enquête Permanente sur les Accidents de la vie Courante¿EPAC) supplies part of this epidemiological knowledge. The basis of data collection rests on the registration of services sought in emergency departments for HLIs in certain hospitals, including data on the injured person, hospital recourses, characteristics of the injury (mechanism, place, activity, type of lesion, part of body injured), products (agents, elements) implicated in the injury. The present report contains detailed results on the EPAC study for the years 1999, 2000, 2001, dealing with over 140 000 home and leisure injuries registered in the hospital emergency departments of Annecy, Besançon, Béthune, Bordeaux, Limoges, Reims and Vannes.
