Dengue Surveillance in Mayotte. Update as of December 10, 2020.

Key Points

Review of the 2019–2020 Outbreak

  • 4,491 cases of dengue have been biologically confirmed since March 2019, including 4,305 cases in 2020.

  • Since mid-June, viral circulation has been extremely low, with fewer than 3 cases detected per month (inter-epidemic phase). Cases are sporadic, and no resurgence of confirmed cases has been observed. Viral circulation is lower than that observed during the same period in 2019.

  • The persistence of low-level viral circulation makes an epidemic resurgence possible during the rainy season. It is essential to continue vector control efforts by testing patients presenting with dengue-like syndrome (via PCR or rapid diagnostic test) to detect a potential resurgence early and implement appropriate measures.

  • Only the DENV-1 serotype has circulated, but the importation of other serotypes from the Indian Ocean region remains a real and ongoing risk.
