Key Points

  • In 2018, the number of participants in the 2018 Smoke-Free Month campaign in the Grand Est region was 18,539, an increase compared to previous years, but they represented only 1.5% [1.4–1.7] of daily smokers in the region, which is lower than the rate in metropolitan France, even though smoking prevalence is high in the region.

  • In 2018, 356 Tobacco-Free Month initiatives were implemented in the region and reported in the Oscars online database, representing an increase of more than 30% compared to 2017.

  • In the Grand Est region in 2015, the total number of deaths attributable to smoking was estimated at 7,675, representing 14.7% of all deaths occurring that same year in the region. This proportion is slightly higher than the 13% estimated for all of France that same year.

  • In the Grand Est region in 2015, the proportion of deaths attributable to smoking among women was 7.4%, close to the national average (6.9%). Among men, however, the proportion of deaths attributable to smoking was 22.3%, 16% higher than the national average (19.3%).
