Dengue Surveillance in the Caribbean. Update as of March 30, 2023.

Key Points

  • In Guadeloupe, two new municipalities now have confirmed dengue outbreaks, in addition to the municipality of Saint-François: Sainte-Anne (in Castaing) and Capesterre-Belle-Eau (in Routhiers). This finding confirms that the virus is spreading to other municipalities in the archipelago.

  • In Martinique, dengue virus transmission continues within the outbreak identified in the municipality of Sainte-Anne. Two municipalities previously free of dengue are now reporting new cases, in addition to the five municipalities where cases had already been detected. The DENV-2 serotype has been identified by the CHUM virology laboratory, whereas the DENV-3 serotype was the predominant strain circulating in 2019–2021.

  • In Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy, the situation remains calm. Various factors (traveler traffic, large events) could quickly lead to a deterioration of the epidemiological situation.

According to the PSAGE* dengue guidelines, the epidemiological situation corresponds to Phase 2, Level 1: Isolated outbreaks or outbreaks with no epidemiological link(s) in Guadeloupe and Martinique, and to Phase 1: Sporadic cases in Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy.
