COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for July 28, 2022

Key Points

In Week 29, SARS-CoV-2 transmission declined again nationwide, and a decrease in new hospital admissions began in Week 28. Virological and hospital indicators, however, remained at high levels.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence and positivity rates declining across all age groups and regions

    • Highest incidence rate among 20–29-year-olds (1,000/100,000)

    • New admissions to critical care still rising in some regions

  • Overseas territories:

    • Incidence rate remains high in Guadeloupe

    • Incidence and positivity rates rising again in Réunion

    • Incidence rate stabilizing at a moderate level in Mayotte

Variants

  • Omicron sublineages: BA.5 predominant in the Flash S28 survey (July 11)

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of July 25, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • Vaccination coverage for the booster dose remains stable at 75.1% among those aged 18 and older and at 85.0% among those aged 65 and older

    • Second booster dose: 22.4% of those aged 60–79 (31.2% of those eligible based on the time since their last injection) and 31.3% of those aged 80 and older (41.8% of those eligible)

  • Given the summer holidays and activities that may lead to increased virus transmission, adherence to the combined measures remains essential to protect the most vulnerable populations, and it is crucial:

    • to be up to date on your COVID-19 vaccinations;

    • to self-isolate if you have symptoms or test positive for COVID-19;

    • to follow preventive measures: wear a mask around vulnerable people or in crowded indoor spaces (public transportation, large gatherings, etc.) and wash your hands frequently.

  • In the event of extreme heat, ventilation of enclosed spaces should be limited to the coolest hours of the day.
