Health of Migrants in the Upper Maroni Region of French Guiana: Challenges and Care

In French Guiana, migrants make up one-third of the population. Providing care for vulnerable people, whether migrants or not, is a complex undertaking involving multiple challenges. Focus on Papaïchton, an isolated community on the banks of the Maroni River, which is multi-ethnic and populated mainly by Alukus and Wayanas. Healthcare services there are provided by a decentralized prevention and care center. These populations generally suffer from a lack of access to health insurance and care, most often due to isolation and economic and social vulnerability.
