Hepatitis A in France. Epidemiological data for 2016.

In 2016, 697 cases of acute hepatitis A were reported (666 in mainland France, 31 in the overseas departments). In the overseas departments, 71% of cases were reported by Mayotte. For mainland France, the annual incidence rate of reported cases was 1.1 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Compared to 2015, the number of cases reported in 2016 in mainland France decreased slightly by about 5% (701 vs. 666).Annual incidence rates in 2015 were generally similar among men (1.2 per 100,000) and women (1.0 per 100,000) but higher among those under 15 years of age (3.1 per 100,000) than in other age groups (0.9 per 100,000).

The two main risk exposures in the 2 to 6 weeks preceding the onset of the disease were a stay outside mainland France (46%) and the presence of hepatitis A cases in the immediate environment (34%), with 77% of these cases occurring within the family. Among cases who had traveled outside mainland France, half (51%) had visited a country in the Maghreb. These results support the implementation of vaccination recommendations, including vaccination of family members of a case and during travel to an endemic area (see the 2017 vaccination recommendations and health recommendations for travelers)

In 2016, 24% of reported cases were part of a cluster of cases investigated by Regional Health Agencies and regional response teams.
