Vaccination in France. Overview of vaccination coverage in 2024.

Key points

Among people aged 65

  • Among people aged 65, only one in two is properly vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, and polio, or against the flu.

    • Vaccination coverage for the diphtheria, tetanus, and polio (DTP) vaccine decreases with age; it is 50% for the 65-year-old booster, 44% for the 75-year-old booster, and 34% for the 85-year-old booster. These boosters remain underutilized.

    • Vaccination coverage for the influenza vaccine for the 2024–2025 season remains low and stable compared to the previous season (54%) for those aged 65 and older. It increases with age: it is 47% among those aged 65–74 and 61% among those aged 75 and older.

  • Less than 20% of people aged 65 and older at high risk for pneumococcal infections are adequately vaccinated against pneumococcal infections: only 18.9% have received at least one dose of vaccine (PCV13) and 16.7% have received at least two doses of vaccine (one dose of PCV13 preceded or followed by a dose of PPS23).

  • To improve these vaccination rates, it is necessary to highlight the benefits of the preventive health screening (between ages 60 and 65) and the free consultation at age 65, particularly in light of new vaccination recommendations for people aged 65 and older in 2025.

  • Vaccinations against pneumococcus and shingles are therefore, as of this year, recommended for all individuals aged 65 and older. Vaccination against RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is also recommended for all individuals aged 75 and older and for those aged 65 to 74 with chronic respiratory and cardiac conditions. These vaccinations are in addition to DTP booster shots, the annual flu vaccine, and the COVID-19 vaccine.

In Infants

  • Among infants, vaccination coverage for mandatory vaccines is generally high.

  • Due to an increase in the number of cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) observed during the 2024–2025 season, vaccination recommendations have changed. Since January 1, 2025, the tetravalent ACWY vaccine and the meningococcal B vaccine have become mandatory for all infants. In 2024, 81.9% of infants had received a first dose of the meningococcal B vaccine (74.7% in 2023). In 2024, 88.6% of infants had received a first dose of the meningococcal C vaccine (monovalent C or quadrivalent ACWY vaccine).

  • Given the current rise in measles cases in France and internationally, it is worth noting that while 94.6% of infants born in 2023 received at least one dose of the measles vaccine, the vaccination coverage required to eliminate this disease (95% for two doses of vaccine) has still not been achieved.

Among adolescents

  • Among adolescents, vaccination coverage for the HPV vaccine continues to rise. In 2024, 58.4% of 15-year-old girls had received a first dose of the vaccine; this figure was 54.6% in 2023. In 2024, 36.9% of 15-year-old boys had received a first dose of the vaccine; this figure was 25.9% in 2023.

  • Vaccination coverage, however, remains below the target of 60% by 2023 and 80% by 2030 (10-Year Cancer Control Strategy 2021–2030). Vaccination campaigns in middle schools could help improve these coverage rates. The results of the vaccination campaign currently underway in middle schools (2024–2025 school year) will be made available after the summer of 2025.

  • Vaccination against meningococcal ACWY is now recommended for all adolescents according to a single-dose schedule administered between ages 11 and 14, regardless of their prior vaccination history, and a catch-up vaccination for those aged 15 to 24. In 2024, 73.6% of adolescents aged 10 to 14 were vaccinated against meningococcal C infections. This figure was 71.9% in 2023.

Among pregnant women

  • Among pregnant women, vaccination coverage for the pertussis vaccine, recommended since 2022, is on the rise. In 2024, 62.3% of women who gave birth were vaccinated against pertussis during their pregnancy. This figure was 43.4% in 2023. Vaccination coverage increased during 2024, reaching 75% of women among those who gave birth in December 2024. This sharp increase could be explained, at least in part, by vaccination recommendations and communications issued in the context of the pertussis epidemic that occurred in 2024.
