Survey on Current and Future Practices Regarding the Tuberculosis Vaccine Among Pediatricians and General Practitioners in France
In light of the upcoming phase-out of the multi-puncture method, we conducted a survey on BCG vaccination practices in April 2005. Six hundred thirty-six pediatricians and 192 general practitioners responded. The majority of physicians (73.6%) do not perform a pre-BCG Tubertest® before the age of six months. Monovax® is the most commonly used form of BCG (93.7%). Less than 30% of doctors say they are prepared to routinely vaccinate children after the planned discontinuation of the multi-puncture method, and nearly one in five pediatricians and one in seven general practitioners say they would prefer to stop vaccinating altogether. The preferred option for the future is to vaccinate only at-risk patients (59%). Nearly 60% of practitioners believe that parents might object to intradermal vaccination. More than two-thirds of practitioners cannot rely on assistance (other than from parents) to restrain children during the intradermal reaction (71.6%). Two-thirds of physicians do not consider it acceptable to refer their patients to colleagues or specialized facilities.
