Motivational interviewing: an effective tool for boosting parents’ confidence in childhood vaccination

Motivational interviewing is an effective technique in many areas of prevention for encouraging individuals to change their behavior (smoking, nutrition, physical activity). In Quebec, it was successfully tested with new parents to address vaccine hesitancy before being rolled out to all maternity wards. In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, a study titled Motivac-Mater was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of such an approach, within the French context of strong mistrust toward vaccines and mandatory childhood vaccinations. The results show that motivational interviewing, conducted by trained midwives, significantly improves confidence in vaccination.
