An investigation into a case of contagious tuberculosis in a school setting, France.
Introduction - The detection of contagious tuberculosis in a community leads to the launch of an investigation which, given the number of people to be notified and contacts to be traced, may sometimes require the establishment of a crisis response team and an expanded task force. Materials and Methods - A case of laryngeal tuberculosis was identified in an individual working in two schools and in regular contact with more than 200 children and 45 adults. After informing the parents of the children and the exposed adults, screening tests (intradermal reaction and chest X-ray) were performed in June 2007 and September 2007. Results - 194 of the 208 children and 30 of the 45 adults scheduled for screening underwent a complete evaluation. Few cases of latent tuberculosis infection (11 children and 1 adult) and no cases of active tuberculosis were identified. Discussion-Conclusion - The list of contacts was likely too broad, but it seemed difficult to be more restrictive given the population involved. This investigation was successfully carried out thanks to the collaboration of several departments within the relevant institutions and regular coordination meetings. The planning and implementation of this investigation provided valuable insights. (R.A.)
