Evaluation of methods for monitoring the treatment of tuberculosis patients using the TB-info software, France, January 1996–December 2003.
In France, tuberculosis has been a reportable disease since 1964. Until now, mandatory reporting has been the sole source of information on the epidemiological situation. Two surveillance networks currently supplement the data obtained through mandatory reporting: the National Reference Center (CNR) for the surveillance of mycobacterial infections and their resistance to antituberculosis drugs, and the TB-info network, which brings together various acute and long-term care hospitals in the Île-de-France region and the five medical-social centers (CMS) for tuberculosis control in the city of Paris. The evaluation of diagnostic criteria (microscopic examination, culture, antibiotic susceptibility testing, histology), therapeutic assessment, and post-treatment follow-up, as well as the assessment of cure rates, the quality of care, and the number of patients lost to follow-up, can finally be carried out thanks to these surveillance networks. In this article, we present the results obtained for these various quantifiable variables following analysis of data compiled in the TB-info software for nearly 1,000 patients with tuberculosis.
