Epidemiology of Tuberculosis in France: Overview of Reported Cases in 2008

The data presented here pertain to cases of active tuberculosis reported in 2008 under the mandatory tuberculosis reporting system. In 2008, there were 5,758 reported cases of active tuberculosis, representing 9.0 cases per 105 inhabitants. In 2008, Île-de-France and French Guiana remained the regions with the highest reporting rates. The reporting rate is also higher among homeless individuals and among people born abroad, particularly among those who recently arrived in France. Compared to 2007, the number of cases increased by 3.3% in 2008. This increase is more moderate than that observed between 2006 and 2007 (4.7%) and is not accompanied by a rise in the number of severe cases (meningitis, miliary tuberculosis). The increase in the number of reported cases could be linked in part to improved case detection and reporting, but this trend calls for vigilance in the coming years. Maintaining sufficient clinical and public health expertise throughout the country is necessary so that the measures implemented to reduce disparities can have the expected impact on the epidemiology of the disease.
