Epidemiological Surveillance of Drowning. 2004 Drowning Surveys. June 1–September 30, 2004. Preliminary Results
As part of epidemiological surveillance, this survey aims to track trends in the number and circumstances of drowning incidents handled by emergency services that result in hospitalization or death. This survey will also help assess the impact of the national drowning prevention program and regulations regarding the safety of private swimming pools. The NOYADES 2004 survey is organized by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) and the Directorate of Civil Defense and Security of the Ministry of the Interior, Internal Security, and Local Freedoms. Its objective is to analyze drownings that occurred in France during the summer of 2004: - to record the number of drowning victims requiring hospitalization or resulting in death, by location (private pool, public pool, river, lake, sea, other location) and according to the circumstances of the drowning (accidental, intentional); - describe the characteristics of the victims (age, gender, etc.); - provide information on the severity of the drowning (stage of drowning) and the outcome for the victims (hospitalization, sequelae, death); - describe the activities being engaged in and the circumstances surrounding these drowning incidents.
