Epidemiological surveillance of accidental drownings in France during the summer of 2002

The 2002 Drowning Survey is the first epidemiological study covering all drowning incidents that occurred in France during the summer of 2002 (June 1 to September 30) and required the intervention of organized rescue services: in private and public swimming pools, in rivers and lakes, at sea, and in other locations (bathtubs, ponds, etc.). The survey recorded 2,826 accidental drownings during the period, 252 of which resulted in death. This article presents the survey results by age group, by location (swimming pool, sea, etc.), and by department (map of France).
