There are several hundred thousand falls among older adults each year in France.

Introduction. Each year in France, people aged 65 and older are involved in 550,000 accidents of daily life (ADL) requiring emergency department visits. They account for more than three-quarters of the 20,000 annual deaths resulting from ADL. The vast majority of these ADL are caused by falls. Methods. The Ongoing Survey on Accidents of Daily Living is based on the recording of emergency department visits for ADLs in several hospitals in France. Data collection is exhaustive. Data from 2004 and 2005 were analyzed to provide results on falls among older adults. Results. Falls accounted for 84% of the causes of acute trauma among people aged 65 and older. The incidence rate of accidental falls resulting in emergency department visits is 4.5 per 100 people, 3 per 100 men, and 5.6 per 100 women. They occurred mainly at home (78%). Fractures accounted for 41% of injuries, and the lower limbs were the most commonly injured (34% of cases). Falls resulted in hospitalization in 37% of cases. Discussion. The EPAC survey is the only source in France that provides estimates of fall incidence rates. These results depend on the characteristics of the hospitals collecting the data. In its current form, however, EPAC does not adequately reflect changes over time in the number of falls among older adults.
