Preventing Falls Among Older Adults at Home: A French-Language Guide to Best Practices in Community Health.
Introduction: Fall prevention is an effective, yet relatively complex, strategy for reducing disability among older adults. This article presents the results of an international French-speaking project aimed at facilitating the implementation of fall prevention interventions. Method: A group of experts from France, Belgium, Quebec, and Switzerland was tasked with conducting a review of the scientific literature in this field and proposing recommendations for best practices. Their conclusions are based on a literature review, as well as an analysis of programs offered in the countries involved. Results: The most effective fall prevention interventions comprise multiple components to address various risk factors simultaneously and target the most vulnerable older adults. Identifying fall risk is a crucial step that allows the program to be tailored to the older adult’s profile. Three levels of intervention are proposed depending on whether the individual presents no risk, a moderate risk, or a high risk of falling. Discussion and conclusion: The dissemination of best practice recommendations should help increase the availability of fall prevention interventions, improve their quality, and encourage the evaluation of such programs.
