Monitoring of everyday accidents during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown

Introduction - Since the implementation of lockdown measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency departments have observed a decrease in the number of non-life-threatening accidents and a rise in severe cases, particularly among young children and the elderly. The objective of this study was to describe the effects of lockdown on emergency department visits for AcVC, by age and type of AcVC, in metropolitan France. Method - Data from the ongoing survey on accidents of daily life (EPAC) regarding hospital emergency care visits following an AcVC were analyzed during the lockdown period (March 16 to May 10, 2020) and compared to data from the same period in 2019. The number of emergency department visits for stroke and their percentages were described, both for all emergency department visits and for those requiring hospitalization, which were considered severe cases. Hospitalization rates were calculated. They are presented by age for the entire population, and then by age, sex, location of the incident, activity at the time of the incident, and mechanism of injury for those under 15 and over 45 years of age. Results - The number of emergency department visits for stroke decreased by nearly 50% during the lockdown period compared to the same period in 2019 (7,115 vs. 15,881). This decline was observed across all age groups and among both men and women. The number of emergency department visits for serious accidents at home increased among children under 15 (+20%; 227 vs. 273) and among people over 45 (+5%; 449 vs. 470). The number of serious cases related to falls increased among children aged 2 to 6 (+12%, 78 vs. 86) and among those aged 65–84 (+15%, 215 vs. 248). The number of severe cases related to household chores among those over 45 (+25%, 40 vs. 50), particularly during gardening activities, increased compared to 2019. Discussion - This information is useful for adapting stroke prevention measures, particularly those related to household accidents during a lockdown period, for young children and older adults.
