Where People Buy Tobacco in France in 2021: Results from the Santé publique France Barometer
This poster, presented at the 16th Congress of the Francophone Society of Tobacco Control held in Dijon (France) on November 24 and 25, 2022, explores how smokers obtained their tobacco in 2021 and how this has changed since 2018, focusing on the origin of the last pack of tobacco purchased by smokers in metropolitan France. The data used comes from the 2021 Santé publique France Barometer, a telephone survey of a random sample of the adult population residing in mainland France, conducted between February and December 2021 among 24,514 adults aged 18 to 85. The study suggests that between 2018 and 2021, smokers in mainland France generally did not change their methods of obtaining tobacco. The significant share of cross-border purchases in certain regions underscores the need for European harmonization of tobacco prices in order to effectively combat smoking.
