Results of the Hospital Staff Tobacco Survey, 2003.
The Ministry of Health has entrusted the Smoke-Free Hospital Network with conducting the annual "Hospital Staff Smoking Barometer" survey, as required by the ministerial circular of April 3, 2000. This study represents one of the few sources of data on the prevalence and trends in smoking among hospital staff and allows for comparisons with available data on the French population. The fight against smoking, identified as a priority in the Cancer Plan launched by the government, serves as a model for healthcare professionals, thereby strengthening the credibility of public health messages regarding prevention. It is in this context that the Smoke-Free Hospital Network operates, with a mission focused on the prevention and management of smoking in hospital settings. The 10-point Smoke-Free Hospital Charter constitutes the fundamental commitment of its members. The first edition of the Barometer was conducted in 2001 among nine hospitals and covered five healthcare professional categories: physicians, nurses, midwives, physical therapists, and nursing assistants. The primary objective was the methodological validation of the survey. The second edition, conducted in 2002, included administrative staff and involved 58 institutions (out of the 100 contacted) spread across the entire country. This was a pilot study that provided an initial approach to analyzing the prevalence of smoking in hospitals. Finally, the 2003 survey secured the participation of 184 institutions, of which 169 were included in the analysis. All results were compiled into a report, which is summarized in this article.
