Regional Analysis of Daily Smoking Among Adults in France in 2021
Introduction – At the regional level, indicators related to tobacco use are useful for guiding prevention policies and monitoring progress toward the smoking reduction targets set out in regional tobacco control programs (PRLTs). This article presents a regional analysis of daily smoking among adults in France in 2021. Materials and Methods – The data used are primarily from the 2021 edition of the Santé publique France Barometer, a representative survey of adults aged 18 to 75 residing in mainland France and in the overseas departments and regions (DROM). The analyses consisted of comparing regional prevalences of daily smoking and measuring changes in these rates relative to previous surveys. Logistic regressions were used to examine the association between smoking and region of residence, as well as social inequalities related to smoking at the regional level. Results – In mainland France, regional prevalence rates of daily smoking in 2021 ranged from 20.6% to 33.2% among men and from 19.1% to 26.6% among women. After adjusting for sociodemographic and economic factors, three regions showed a significantly different risk of daily smoking compared to other regions in mainland France: Pays de la Loire (adjusted odds ratio, ORa=0.85), Occitanie (ORa=1.17), and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (ORa=1.30). Conclusion – Social inequalities in smoking remain very pronounced in almost all regions; reducing them is therefore a major challenge across the entire country.
