E-cigarette use in France in 2014

The 2014 Health Barometer provides an overview of e-cigarette use in mainland France. Among people aged 15–75, 25.7% report having tried e-cigarettes at least once in their lives, 6.0% currently use them, and 2.9% use them daily. More men have tried them and use them. The rate of experimentation decreases with age. The prevalence of smoking is very high among vapers: 83.1% are smokers (74.7% daily smokers) and 15.0% are former smokers. Furthermore, among smokers, individuals with the lowest incomes as well as the unemployed are less likely to be vapers. Four out of five vapers who also smoke believe they have reduced their cigarette consumption thanks to e-cigarettes. Former smokers who vape represent 0.9% of those aged 15–75, or approximately 400,000 people. This figure represents an initial estimate of the proportion of smokers who have successfully quit smoking, at least temporarily, thanks to e-cigarettes. Vapers who have never smoked (or who vape just to try it) account for only 2% of vapers (or about 0.1% of the population).
