Attempts to quit smoking in the fourth quarter of 2016 and their connection to “Smoke-Free Month”: initial findings from the 2017 Health Barometer
In October 2016, Santé publique France launched the first edition of the "Mois sans tabac" initiative, inspired by the British Stoptober campaign, with the primary goal of encouraging smokers to try to quit. This study provides a description of smoking cessation attempts (SCAs) made during this first edition, based on data from the 2017 Health Barometer, a representative random survey of the population residing in metropolitan France conducted in the first half of 2017 on a sample of 25,319 individuals. The primary variable of interest is whether daily smokers made a quit attempt lasting at least 24 hours in the last quarter of 2016, as reported retrospectively. Nearly one in six daily smokers (15.9%) reported having made a quit attempt in the last quarter of 2016, and 18.4% of them reported that it was related to “Month Without Tobacco,” representing approximately 380,000 quit attempts linked to “Month Without Tobacco.” About half of the individuals who made a quit attempt in the last quarter of 2016 used external support (47.7%), a higher proportion (67.1%) among those reporting that their attempt was linked to Smoke-Free Month. Analysis of factors associated with quit attempts linked to Smoke-Free Month shows little variation by socioeconomic status. These initial results will be supplemented by an analysis based on exposure to the campaign, allowing for a more in-depth study of the campaign’s effectiveness.
